Hello My Name Is Malware

Mon, 07/18/2016 - 16:56 -- Rachel Cunningham

This series of blogs will pick out a certain type of cyber threat and we will tell you what you need to know and tips about how to prevent these attacks. First up: Malware

We remember the days before hackers, before malware and ransomware, before anti-virus and firewalls. Unfortunately, those days are a distant memory, and even your basic firewall can be compromised by cybercriminals. Lets get to know a little more about these threats so we can stop making cyber criminals so rich.

The term “Malware” is actually abbreviated from the term “Malicious Software.” By definition it is software that is specifically designed to gain access or damage a computer without the knowledge of the owner. The software is considered malicious based on the intent of the creator, and not so much on which features it possesses. There are different types of malware, such as spyware, true viruses, worms, malicious code, etc. Today, malware is created for profit through forced advertising (adware), stealing sensitive information (spyware), spreading email spam, or to extort money (ransomware).

Defects in the operating system, having a network of computers that all run off the same system, giving users too many permissions or just operating windows can make your computer a target for malware. The best defense against malware is caution. Be careful about what websites you browse, and what emails you open. Make sure you have a firewall & anti-virus software installed and up to date.

Malware protection software provides that vital second layer of security for your computer or your network. No protection is 100% with ever changing malware methods, but a combination of personal awareness and well-designed protective tools will make your computer as safe as it can be. Give us a call if you have not installed an anti-virus or have any questions regarding malware.
